Ultrasonic Testing in many instances can replace and improve upon the need for Radiographic (X-Ray) NDE (Non-Destructive Examination). This testing method can be used on ferrous and nonferrous materials, and is often suited for thicker sections of pipe and can often detect the finer lines or plainer defects which may not be as readily detected by Radiographic testing.
This method of testing makes use of mechanical vibrations similar to sound waves but of higher frequency. Ultrasonic Testing is not only safer, but can produce test results almost instantly. This is achieved by the reflection technique being used. The pulses of ultrasonic waves strike discontinuities in the weld, sending a signal to the Inspector. Since the frequencies being used are constant, our Inspectors are able to pinpoint with great accuracy, the distance and measurement of discontinuities in weld deposits.
One of the most useful characteristics of Ultrasonic Testing is its ability to determine the exact position of a discontinuity in a weld. The most obvious advantage to Radiography is the question of Safety. Since we are only using sound waves at a high frequency, we are able to test within close proximity to the work being performed in the field. Only the weld being tested is affected, letting work continue in the field, while NDE is being performed. There is no need to skirt off a 150 yard radius as is done in traditional radiography.
Having understood first-hand the frustration traditional radiography in the field, we are excited to pass on this faster and safer method to produce more exact and accurate test results. Our equipment is highly portable, allowing us to quickly move from one testing area to another, whether it is on ground level, down in a pipeline trench, or through a complicated piping system in a generation station.
Ultrasonic Testing can:
- Produce results faster than traditional radiography. Results can be produced and recorded almost instantly.
- Almost completely eliminates the possibility to ‘misinterpret’ radiography film by pinpointing discontinuities in welds with much higher accuracy.
- Create a safer work environment by utilizing sounds waves to replace radio-graphic testing.
- Cut the cost of traditional radiography in half. The cost burden of carrying a radiation source is eliminated, as well as, labor costs. There is no need for a 2-3 man crew with Ultrasonic Testing.
- Decrease mobilization time by eliminating the need to obtain permits for radioactive materials. Ultrasonic testing equipment can be carried virtually anywhere.
Ultrasonic Testing uses very limited consumables as well. There is no radiographic film to interpret, and no cost for you to absorb in producing x-ray film. We can deliver your results digitally straight from the field as we are performing the work.
